![]() An MP’s salary of nearly £82,000 is generous at three times the average British pay packet, but going into politics still involves a hefty pay cut for some, and comes with public pressure to forego any annual rise you might be offered. Second jobs with no social value should be banned.īy all means, let there be a quid pro quo for this sacrifice. But it insults voters’ intelligence to pretend that taking five-figure sums to advise big companies – or even to knock out a few Daily Telegraph columns – is genuinely for the good of the nation. Work shadowing schemes for MPs, letting them step into the shoes of their constituents for a couple of weeks a year, could hugely enrich parliament’s understanding of the outside world too. The Commons too was better informed for members standing up and explaining exactly what they’d seen in A&E or (in the case of Labour’s Nadia Whittome) in care homes. Several medically trained MPs returned to the Covid wards or put in stints at vaccination clinics during the pandemic, and in doing so didn’t just benefit their patients. Sometimes it can be socially useful, as in the case of those MPs who are qualified doctors and nurses keeping up their registration by doing the odd hospital shift, or reservists in the armed forces. If a company really values an MP for their personal knowledge and skills, rather than for their ability to have a word in the right ear, then it can hire them a decent interval after they’ve left.Ī side hustle is not, of course, always a terrible thing for a politician. The Scottish and Welsh parliaments already forbid this particular kind of moonlighting, so why not Westminster? Ban dubious corporate gigs for politicians tomorrow, and before long it will seem bizarre that an arrangement so obviously open to abuse – under which MPs can work as consultants so long as they don’t actually lobby on behalf of their clients – was ever allowed. The only surprising thing about this week’s renewed demands for a ban on MPs taking second jobs as political consultants is that it took public outrage over Owen Paterson’s paid lobbying for the penny to drop. ![]() Even on the lowest rung of the ladder, being a good backbench MP is not the sort of job from which you clock off at 5pm sharp, let alone bunk off for an afternoon. The team that sent the Bills into a cold, dark winter? Their Week 9 opponent, the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bills' 2022 season ended with such a thud that the entire offseason has been spent wondering if their championship window is closing. The Week 1 game against the Aaron Rodgers-led Jets and the Week 4 game against the Dolphins, who should have a healthy Tua Tagovailoa and new cornerback Jalen Ramsey, could give us some early insight into whether the Bills are in real danger of being toppled. The Bills have owned the AFC East for the last three seasons, but big-name acquisitions this offseason should make this one of the most competitive divisions in the league. The protagonist is brought to their lowest point. In the aftermath of the climax, tension builds, and the story heads inevitably towards. A point of no return, from which the protagonist can no longer go back to the status quo. The protagonist actively pursues their goal. The status quo is established an inciting incident occurs. Named after a 19th-century German novelist and playwright, Freytag’s Pyramid is a five-point dramatic structure that’s based on the classical Greek tragedies of Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripedes. Now that we’ve established the most essential components of story, let’s look at seven of the most popular story structures used by writers - and how they deploy these components. Seven story structures every writer should know Without these steps, there is no conflict and, therefore, no story - merely a series of events that will struggle to keep a reader interested. It can be easier to see these moments in genres with higher stakes (such as a military thriller), but you’ll find them in almost any type of story.Įven in something as seemingly mild as a rural romance, there will be rising action as our heroes tentatively fall in love and an all-is-lost moment where it seems like they will never get together (before they inevitably do). These are all common ‘ beats’ to most stories. The protagonist a) gets what they want, b) doesn’t get what they want, or c) doesn’t get what they want, but realizes that they have something that’s more important. The protagonist believes they have failed. The protagonist pursues their goal and is tested along the way. Sometimes called a catalyst, this is an event that sets the story in motion, forcing the protagonist out of their comfort zone. This is usually the first part of the story - but not always. The protagonist is living some kind of ‘normal life’ but has a greater desire or goal. When you boil them all down, all stories have certain shared elements. When people discuss different story structures, they’re often talking about the different frameworks used to analyze stories. Become a master of story structure, and you will have the world at your feet. Writing is an art, but if there’s one part of the craft that’s closer to science, this would be it. Writers can turn to story theory and narrative structure whenever their story just isn’t working when they feel that their writing is awkward, aimless, or - worst of all - boring. An account of a person who robs a bank can become an examination of greed, loyalty, or the failure of the American Dream. Structure helps writers draw connections between ‘things that happen’ and ‘things that matter.’ A tale about two vastly different people falling in love can also be about the value of compromise. In other words, structuring the plot well creates a satisfying narrative experience that accomplishes the author’s aims. Tightly controlled narrative structure results in all the reader’s questions being answered, provides a climax followed by resolution and information at the end of the story, furthers the characters’ development, and unravels any central conflicts. A story’s structure directly affects the way the plot unfolds and how its driving forces (characters, obstacles, setting, etc.) are introduced to the reader. Story structure, also known as narrative structure, is the order in which events are organized into a beginning, middle, and ending in a novel. This post will reveal seven distinct story structures that any writer can use to build a compelling narrative. While using a pre-existing blueprint might make you worry about ending up with a formulaic, predictable story, you can probably analyze most of your favorite books using various narrative structures that writers have been using for decades (if not centuries)! Nothing makes the challenging task of writing a novel feel more attainable than adopting a story structure to help you plot your narrative. Rather than a score that uses instruments (of the LSDJ/AT2 variety where all parameters are defined first) and commands, I’d like to begin by building subroutines within tables. SO, what I really want is an OP元 control utility that approaches scoring from a different angle. Adilb Tracker 2 provides some joy to me in that FM sounds unlike anything else, but building/loading instruments and controlling individual parameters with effects in the main tracker requires a lot more planning. GoatTracker2 is my go-to escape these days because I find it really cathartic to write notes on the left side of the screen and maintain an efficient pool of wave/pulse/filter commands. But so far the only ones that don’t make me want to bang my head against a wall are the SID trackers that were built to conserve memory by storing parameters and parameter changes in master tables. Trackers are great for when I want to write catchy little chiptunes or want a really tight sequence to bounce into another piece. I mentioned it above, but this is a direct link: įinally, I’d like to outline the first steps towards a vision or a goal that I have: I know any assembly language is a royal pain but I need to wrap my head around the whole register-writing method of synth programming. I think I’m going to take a bit of a break from my DOS/OP元 adventures and start playing with hardcoded SID songs in the Vice emulator for C64. I do have some idea of what I want to do now, though. These older, cheaper synth chips are marvelously efficient but almost completely alien to me. ![]() I’m very much a post-MIDI musician and often take for granted how simple and flexible control messages are nowadays. I was first attracted to this because I’ve had a lot of fun building drones and little sequences in Supercollider but craved the limitations that pushed me to get into music in the first place (I got into LSDJ and some SID emulation tools back in middle school). ![]() Control is done by writing to various registers. Adlib Tracker 2, for example, uses per-song variables to set drum mode on and off and “link” 2op channels to form 4op channels. There is also a 5 channel “drum mode” that uses 6 operators. 4op mode just cannibalizes the operators from another channel for more complex AM/FM stuff. The “default” is to have 18 2op channels. Here are the basics for the uninitiated: the OP元 has a max of 36 operators. The HTML “OP元 Programmer’s Guide” is probably where I’ll start doing deep reading and making notes. I found a nice little hub page here ( ) that illustrates this. Here’s what I know so far: compared to other computer/synth scenes, there’s almost nothing. ![]() I’m basically a layman relative to the active posters here but have been inspired to start diving deeper. I’m neck deep in finals, but have been doing some research and feel the need to procrastinate a bit. ![]() In doing so, they often cross a body of moving water (like a river), and several of them – (the ones who were too arrogant to wear life vests) will drown. This myth is partly based on the fact that every three or four years, a slice of lemmings (no…really! That’s what a group of lemmings is called!) will get so big that they’ll head out and try to migrate elsewhere, where there’s more room, and they assume that their property taxes will be lower. However, the most persistent myth about lemmings is that when their population becomes unsustainably great, they commit mass suicide by following each other off of tall seaside cliffs. They migrate in large herds, and during their migratory season they appear suddenly, en masse, seemingly out of nowhere. They are usually around 6 inches in length, with a cute stubby tail, soft fur, and the appealing little face that is characteristic of some of our most cherished herbivores (like the Easter bunny). As you might know, lemmings are adorable little rodents that are typically found in or near the Arctic tundra. Disney should not only set the record straight about the fact that lemmings do not commit mass suicide, but the multi-billion dollar corporation must also apologize for its actions in the 1950s documentary and immediately donate funds to create Arctic refuges for lemmings and other cold-habitat mammals. There is a myth with which we’re all familiar. It is time Disney make up for its disgusting actions of the 1950s and protect against the actual risks faced by lemmings today.ĭisney has made money off of portrayals of animals for decades – and it is time it takes responsibility for the myth they perpetrated. Their tundra habitats are at great risk as the planet continues to warm and governments fail to take meaningful steps to cut greenhouse gas emissions. But these adorable, short-tailed voles are threatened by climate change like so many other arctic mammals. Mass suicide is not a risk for lemmings – population booms and reductions that are natural for the species are likely what began the lesser known myth that Disney made utterly widespread and enduring. In reality, lemmings do no such thing, despite the myth that has persisted for half a century. Using its grotesque movie magic, Disney was able to make it look as though hundreds of lemmings were intentionally jumping from a cliff and plummeting into icy water where they would slowly drown. But Disney's White Wilderness wasn't filmed anywhere near lemming territory – the animals depicted were actually taken from Manitoba to Alberta, where the entire scene of a horrific "mass suicide" was staged. They weigh, on average, about an ounce, and many are found in Alaska and northern Canada. ![]() Lemmings are adorable rodents that thrive in the tundra and open grasslands ecosystems. ![]() Sign the petition now to tell Disney to take responsibility, set the record straight, and invest in the future of the lemming! ![]() It is time the company lay this myth to rest and do its part to make up for the smearing of lemmings' legacy! But the phrase has nothing to do with actual lemming behavior, and became widely used/circulated after a dangerous and fabricated 1950s nature documentary, White Wilderness, in which Disney intentionally threw dozens of lemmings off a cliff to fit the narrative of their film. Ever heard the phrase "don't be a lemming?" Referencing the tiny, hamster-like rodent, it generally means to not follow the crowd, and make decisions for yourself. ![]() The download links provided take you directly to the vendors website.
